Federal support for sustainable development

Sustainable development encompasses various themes ranging from agriculture and anti-racism to spatial development and energy. The federal government provides funding to support these areas and consistently applies sustainable development principles to its own activities.

Federal support for sustainable development

Achieving the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) demands collective engagement from all stakeholders. To support key initiatives by cantons, communes and civil society, the federal government provides funding for various areas of sustainable development.

The following list outlines the various types of federal funding sources available, with the goal of facilitating access for stakeholders from civil society, cantons and municipalities.

Note that programmes and information change regularly, so this list may not be complete.

Federal government: leading by example

The Swiss federal government consistently applies sustainable development principles to its own activities. The sustainability report shows how the Federal Administration leads by example in sustainable development matters in its roles as a resource user, employer, investor, procurer and owner of autonomous units.

You can find the sustainability report on are.admin.ch (in German).

Sustainable development funding programme

The principles of the Federal Council’s Sustainable Development Strategy can only be implemented if all actors at national, cantonal, regional and communal levels participate. This is the goal of the funding programme: It supports projects and processes advancing sustainable development. To receive support, projects must clearly contribute to the 2030 Agenda, incorporate all three dimensions of sustainable development (society, economy, environment) and account for interactions between these dimensions.
The program focuses on innovative projects and provides start-up assistance for concrete projects with a direct positive impact on sustainable development. Annual project calls focus on specific themes.

More information on the project can be found on are.admin.ch (in German).

Toolbox Agenda 2030

The 2030 Agenda Toolbox provides practical guidance for cantons, communes and businesses for implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It consists of one toolbox for cantons and municipalities and one for businesses.

Further information on the 2030 Agenda Toolbox can be found on are.admin.ch (in German).
