SDG 14: Life below water

The 2030 Agenda defines SDG 14 as follows: conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. Switzerland is making every effort to achieve this goal and its targets by 2030.

What is SDG 14 about?

SDG 14 demands a significant reduction in marine pollution of all kinds. Marine and coastal ecosystems should be sustainably managed and protected. Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing should also be ended.

The pollution and overuse of oceans is giving rise to a number of challenges, such as the acute threat to biodiversity, ocean acidification and increasing volumes of plastic waste. SDG 14 aims to halt these developments. In addition, it takes up the issue of industrial fishing and the industrial use of marine resources which, together with climate change, are putting increasing pressure on ecosystems. SDG 14's targets specifically address an end to overfishing and destructive fishing practices. Similarly, certain forms of fisheries subsidies are to be prohibited.

The Federal Council is committed to implementing the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development together with all UN member states by 2030. The federal government will provide an assessment of how well Switzerland has achieved each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This will be based on an analysis of key progress and challenges for each of the total 169 targets.

How well has Switzerland progressed in its implementation of SDG 14?

What, specifically, is Switzerland doing to achieve SDG 14 and its targets? What do the figures say? What progress has Switzerland made? What challenges still need to be addressed? And who is involved in implementation?

You'll find the answers on SDGital2030.ch.
