SDG 2: Zero hunger

The 2030 Agenda defines SDG 2 as follows: end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Switzerland is making every effort to achieve this goal and its targets by 2030.

What is SDG 2 about?

SDG 2 sets out to eliminate hunger, end all forms of malnutrition, and set guidelines for promoting sustainable agriculture. Food systems have an overarching effect on all 17 SDGs under the 2030 Agenda, and may therefore be crucial to achieving it.

Undernourishment afflicts nearly 800 million people worldwide, most of whom are women and children. In addition to ending hunger, SDG 2 includes a target on ending all forms of malnutrition. The quality of food is just as important as its quantity. The goal also integrates economic considerations, including a target to double the agricultural productivity and income of smallholder farms by 2030. To ensure that expanding food production does not have an adverse effect on the environment, SDG 2 also includes targets on ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.

The Federal Council is committed to implementing the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development together with all UN member states by 2030. The federal government will provide an assessment of how well Switzerland has achieved each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This will be based on an analysis of key progress and challenges for each of the total 169 targets.

How well has Switzerland progressed in its implementation of SDG 2?

What, specifically, is Switzerland doing to achieve SDG 2 and its targets? What do the figures say? What progress has Switzerland made? What challenges still need to be addressed? And who is involved in implementation?

You'll find the answers on SDGital2030.ch.
